Academy Council took up proposals of Academy prizes and honorary medals on its 30th meeting on June 7, 2011.
Academy Council recommended to the President of the Academy of Sciences of CR, upon proposal of the Institute of Physics, to award the Mach Medal for merits in physical sciences to Professor Dieter Vollhardt from the University of Augsburg who has been collaborated with Prof. V. Janiš and Dr. J. Kuneš from the Institute of Physics in the field of condensed matter theory. The award ceremony took place in the headquarters of the Academy of Sciences on June 8.
Academy Council, upon the proposal of the Institute of Plasma Physics, recommended to the President of the Academy of Sciences of CR to award the Mach Medal for merits in physical sciences to Ing. Karel Jungwirth, DrSc., earlier director of the Institute of Physics (2001-7) who played a significant role in creating the Research Center PALS, a laser utility shared by the Institute of Plasma Physics and the Institute of Physics. K. Jungwirth is an internationally recognized expert in the field of high-temperature plasma and represents the Czech Republic in a number of international boards (LASERLAB-EUROPE, HiPER-PP, ELI-PP).
Academic Council recommended to the President of the Academy of Sciences of CR to follow the recommendation of the Council for Sciences and award in memoriam the Honorary Medal for Merits in the Academy of Sciences to RNDr. Václav Novák, CSc., a former member of the Department of Functional Materials who recently passed away.
Academic Council recommended to the President of the Academy of Sciences of CR to accept the proposal of the Committee for Awards of the Academy of Sciences and award the Prize of the Academy of Sciences for Achieved Results of High Scientific Importance to a team of the Institute of Physics formed by RNDr. Antonín Šimůnek, CSc. (Department of Structural Analysis) and RNDr. Jiří Vackář, CSc. (Department of Condensed Matter Theory) for the result: Hardness of materials with ionic and covalent bond. Academic Council also recommended to award the same prize to an interdisciplinary team headed by Prof. RNDr. Blanka Říhová, DrSc. from the Microbiological Institute AS CR, a member of which is also Doc. Ing. Emil Pollert, DrSc. (Department of Magnetim and Superconductivity) for the result: Nanoparticles and supermolecular systems for targeted medicament transport.
