The Institute was established in 1992. It is the only one in the ASCR pursuing economic studies since the Institute of Economics and the Prognostication Institute, both of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, were dissolved. Pursuant to Act No. 341/2005 Coll., the Institute became a public research institution as of 1 January 2007.
The Institute’s work consists of theoretical and empirical research in the fields of micro- and macroeconomics, econometry, finance, currencies and banking, theory of organised structures, labor economy, international trade and finance, developmental economy, economy of municipalities and regions, environmental economy, health-care economy and economic transformation in Central and Eastern Europe. The Institute participates in forming governmental economic programmes, cooperates with local and foreign institutes on joint research projects and carries out economic education and retraining of economists.
