The aim of the proposed project is at research in the technology of new materials and the development of new techniques for the preparation of planar optically active structures, mainly polymeric carbon layers, on the silicon substrate. Specifically, carbon layers with -(C-C)-, -(C=C)- and -(C=N-C)- bonds or, potentially, the layers with bonds to silicon will be studied. New method of doping of these wave-guiding layers with laser-active ions will be studied with respect to the luminescence efficiency using, among others, the new and original method of low temperature diffussion of erbium and other elements contained in solution. Preparation of optically active thin polymeric organic films will also be among the goals of the project. In the first stage, high purity common polymers as eg. polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) or polystyrene (PS) will be used. Solutions of these polymers in acetone or toluene will be doped with salts of trivalent lanthanoids (mainly Nd and Er). The effect of concentration and distribution of the dopant on the luminescence properties of the layer and basic waveguide characteristics (optical attenuation, mode structure etc.) will be studied for both types of materials.

The role of the IREE team is in the diagnostics and characterization of waveguide properties (mode structure, attenuation, luminescence properties of waveguides etc.)
