Measurement of differential cross-section of Z boson in ATLAS

The main aim of the experiment ATLAS in the LHC at CERN is to test the contemporary Standard Model of particle physics up to the highest center-of-mass energies of 14 TeV. Especially the last missing Standard Model fundamental particle – Higgs boson is searched. Or supersymmetrical particles and other exotic processes.

Our group has participated within the framework of the Standard Model group of ATLAS, investigating the possibilities of ATLAS experiment to measure double differential cross section as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity since the 2003 year. The measurement of the differential cross section of the Z boson as a function of its transverse momentum is an important test of Standard Model. According to perturbative QCD the nonzero transverse momentum of the Z meson is generated via the gluon radiation from the initial quark-antiquark pair, which will be tested. The ATLAS experiment can measure the mentioned differential cross section at the higher energies and then with higher statistics than it was measured by previous collaborations UA1, UA2, D0 and CDF.

Paper [1] belongs among the most important papers of the ATLAS collaboration in the preparation period before data taking. It summarizes ATLAS potential to measure all expected physics processes. It includes the exhaustive study of the pre-ATLAS physical knowledge and analysis of generated processes completed by the full simulation/reconstruction in the ATLAS detector. Pavel Staroba directly contributed to the chapter "Electroweak Boson Cross Section Measurements".

Pavel Staroba is involved in the work highly important for all physical studies of the whole ATLAS community. He has been on the position of Monte Carlo production contact of Standard Model Working Group since the year 2007. He coordinates and paticipates in creation of the new samples of generated events for physical studies.

Mirek Myška investigates the process of electroweak boson creation in multiple parton interactions. Measurement of this process can significanly contribute to our knowledge of the proton structure. Michal Svatoš investigates measurement of differential cross-section of the process roton proton -> b(c) + gamma + X. This measurement can put constraints on the b(c) parton distribution in the proton.
