Admissions

General Information

The application deadline is February 28. Please read this page before applying.

Eligibility for Study

Any individual from any country is welcome to submit an application to CERGE-EI without the assistance of a third party. There is no application fee. All admissions decisions are made internally at CERGE-EI by the faculty admissions committee.

CERGE-EI does not discriminate on the basis of national origin, race, gender, or religion. Students are expected to have a good background in mathematics as well as sufficient proficiency in English to read, write and fully understand study material. Previous education in economics is welcomed, though not required. Applicants must hold at least a Bachelor's degree.

All students are urged to submit a TOEFL or other certified English language exam score, as well as GRE (or other proficiency test) scores.

How to Apply

The following materials are required in order for an application to be processed:

  • Application form: we strongly encourage you to fill in the online application form. It enables us to keep track of your application prior to the arrival of your completed application package. The application is also available in PDF (you may want to send a hard copy of the application form along with your other application materials).
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Statement of motivation—a 1000 to 2000-word statement explaining your academic and research background and interests, your career goals, and how the program at CERGE-EI will help you meet your objectives. Please see the Statement of Motivation Guidelines.
  • Certified copies of all your diplomas, including their translation to English.
  • Official transcripts from all universities attended, including their translation to English.
  • Two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with your academic background (forms available here).

ALL MATERIALS MUST BE IN ENGLISH OR MUST BE ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS ACCOMPANIED BY ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS. (The translation must be official: either as part of the diploma or a certified translation.)

Admissions Process

Approximately 90 candidates are invited to attend the summer Preparatory semester, a two-month semester beginning at the end of June or early July. Performance in macroeconomics, microeconomics, mathematics, and English academic writing courses taken during the Preparatory semester determines which students are finally admitted to the program, which typically begins the first week of September.
