The Department was established in IPE in 1993 in order to continue the research in optical fibre technology, which started in the Academy of Sciences in the end of the 1970s. The activity of the Department is concentrated on material and technological research in the field of fibre optics. This research is done in close contacts with other research groups in the Department of Optical Sensors and Department of Guided-wave Photonics of IPE.
Objectives:
Research and preparation of special optical fibres - development of novel structures and materials for optical chemical sensors and for non-linear optical applications:
- Microstructure optical fibres
- Doped and inverted graded-index fibre structures
- Special fibre coatings for the detection of hydrocarbons
- Novel fibre structures for the inscription of long period gratings.
The research is based on complete technology for optical fibre preparation (MCVD perform preparation, drawing, characterization) and on the sol-gel method, which is being developed simultaneously.
