MA/PhD in Economics

The Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education – Economics Institute offers the program of graduate studies in theoretical and applied economics, leading to an MA degree which has an absolute charter issued in the USA and to a PhD degree which has an absolute charter issued in the USA, and is fully accredited in the Czech Republic.

The MA program consists of two years of coursework.  The PhD program consists of the MA program followed by two to three years of supervised dissertation research. The working language of the institution is English. CERGE-EI encourages its students to conduct part of their dissertation research at partner institutions in Western Europe and North America, as well as to participate in collaborative research projects in other countries.

The application deadline is February 28!

Many students admitted to the MA/PhD program are granted tuition waivers for the first two years of study.  Almost all students who continue in the PhD program after the first two years are granted tuition waivers. No separate application is necessary to be considered for the tuition waiver. Successful applicants will be invited to participate in a competitive two-month Preparatory semester in July and August, after which final admissions decisions will be made. Students can ask for travel expenses coverage. The request for such grant should be attached to the application form and should free-format clearly explain why such grant is needed.

Additional admissions to the Ph.D. program are available for students who are awarded with the Czech Government Scholarship. Holders of this scholarship are also eligible for somewhat higher financial support. The list of countries whose citizens are eligible for the the Czech Government Scholarships vary from year to year.  In the past years, the Czech Government Scholarships were available for citizens of the following countries:

Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Egypt, Ethiopia, Georgia, Ghana, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Panama, Serbia and Vietnam.

Applicants from the above mentioned countries are strongly encouraged to apply. A separate application to the Czech embassy in your country is necessary. Attention! The deadline for the Czech Government Scholarship is around middle of January, 2011! (The exact date varies by the country of residence; please inquire with the Czech embassy.)  See admissions & financial info for details.
