Combined Magnetostratigraphic Studies of Cenozoic Volcanics, Bohemian Massif

Cenozoic volcanism of the Bohemian Massif concentrates to the graben structure defined as the Ohře/Eger Rift. Here, two extensive volcanic complexes are developed. Besides, many isolated volcanic bodies are scattered inside and outside the structure. Volcanics are considerably eroded due to their age (15-30 Ma on average for most of them). Nevertheless, superficial volcanic products are still preserved. Magnetic properties of these rocks, reflecting the orientation of global magnetic field from the time of their effusion, are studied. This can be used for the identification of lava flow directions, locations of tuff vents and, most importantly, for the understanding of the succession of volcanic events in a time-scale. These results will constitute an idea of time and space distribution of separate volcanic bodies and evolution of complexes, as well as their paleoenvironmental relationships. This research project is being solved at the Institute of Geology AS CR from several points of view, with paleomagnetic characteristics being the unifying one http://www.gli.cas.cz/departments/paleomagnet/. It will result in a complex evaluation of interrelationships, time succession and paleoecology of Cenozoic volcanism.
