More about BIOCEV project

The geological processes forming the continents and oceans on our planet are significantly reflected in compositions and amounts of the sediments which are deposited in the marine basins. These sediments have, therefore, a great importance for us as carriers of the records about ambient conditions and environments. The formation of mountain belts together with changes of the entire configurations on the Earth surface and in adjacent litospheric layers are long-term processes. These cumulative changes have duration of millions or tens to hundreds of millions of years, but they contain also episodes of very fast development in certain stages of continental break-up or collisions. The analyses of these processes require, therefore, a refinement of our knowledge about time connections between individual horizons and whole sections in the sediments of individual basins, as well as among their fragments in orogenic structures. To achieve the high-resolution correlation results in sediments of deep geological past, we are developing and utilizing the methods which are based on studies on complex impurities which were embedded in relatively neutral medium of limestone deposits. It is particularly based on the magnetic and radioactive features of these impurities. The reliability of these detailed correlation images which have resolution of thousands to hundreds of year, for sediments hundreds of millions of years old, is secured using the detailed guiding by assemblages of fossil organisms, to that extent as they evolved, expanded or were extinct during the time. The project has recently been focused on the world famous geological units in central Bohemia, on the territory that is known under the name Barrandian.
