Konference svede dohromady historiky ze zemí Visegrádské skupiny, aby diskutovali problémy spojené s rozdílným vnímáním naší společné historie. Hlavním tématem diskuse budou osobnosti a události, které přes hranice vyvolávají odlišné, často protichůdné interpretace a hodnocení. Středověcí panovníci, novověcí zakladatelé i bořitelé států, revolucionáři, bojovníci za svobodu a nezávislost byli tématem podrobného historického bádání a je možné vést velmi sofistikovanou diskusi, jak a proč různě jsou vnímáni a hodnoceni v jednotlivých zemích střední Evropy. Existují i témata (např. životní osudy významného politika maďarské menšiny Jánose Esterházyho), kde teprve společná debata pomůže narýsovat žádoucí linie budoucího bádání. Debata o takových, někdy více, někdy méně kontroverzních tématech, bude jistě užitečná nejen pro nás samotné, ale může být i důležitým a inspirujícím signálem pro okolní svět, že jakkoli visegrádské země mohou mít problémy se společnou historií, jsme schopni a ochotni si navzájem naslouchat a společně diskutovat, sine ira et studio, i značně problematická témata.
The conference will bring together historians from the countries of the Visegrád Group to discuss problems linked to the different perceptions of our shared history. The main topics of discussion will be the people and events that have, across state and regional boundaries, called forth different, often contradictory interpretations and assessments. The medieval rulers, the founders and destroyers of modern states, the revolutionaries, and the fighters for freedom and independence have already been subjects of detailed historical research, and one can carry on highly sophisticated discussions about how and why they are perceived and assessed differently in the individual countries of central Europe. But there are other topics, for example, the fate of János Esterházy the leading ethnic Hungarian politician in the former Czechoslovakia, for which only a common discussion can help to determine the outlines of future research. Discussion of such subjects, sometimes more, sometimes less controversial, will certainly be useful for us, but also may well be an important, inspiring signal to the surrounding world, informing it that even though the Visegrád countries may have problems with their shared history, we are willing and able to listen to each other and to discuss, without bitterness or bias, even considerably problematic topics.
