I hold an MPhil in Applied Linguistics from the University of Birmingham (UK), received an MA in Rhetoric and Linguistics (cum laude) from the Catholic University of America in 1994, and a BA in Philosophy (summa cum laude) from the same university in 1989. I am currently completing a PhD in Applied Linguistics at the University of Birmingham (expected 2011). I have taught undergraduate and graduate level academic writing and ESL courses since 1992 at various colleges in the Washington DC area and at George Mason University, Virginia, and was instructor of English and ESL at Montgomery College, Maryland, from 1997 until joining CERGE-EI in 2001. I am contributing author and editor of Thinking and Writing (Brandywine Press, 1998) and editor on various projects.

My research interests include corpus linguistics, critical discourse analysis, discourse semantics, social and critical theory.
