Welcome to CERGE-EI

Welcome to CERGE-EI, a joint workplace of Charles University in Prague and the Economics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, a unique partnership designed to promote modern education and research in economics.

In its twenty-year history, CERGE-EI has awarded well over one hundred Ph.D. degrees and two hundred M.A. degrees under an absolute charter issued in the USA along with Ph.D. accreditation by the Ministry of Education of the Czech Republic.  CERGE-EI researchers have established a remarkable record of publication in top economic journals. Our alumni pursue academic careers in prestigious university economics departments around the world and work in international organizations such as the IMF, the EBRD, and the World Bank, among others. The great majority of our alumni practice modern economics research and development to help build a sustainable institutional environment in the post-communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe. For many years in this region, dogma and politics prevented economics from emerging as a free academic discipline and communism drew a sharp line between education and research. This makes us particularly proud of CERGE-EI's accomplishments in bringing modern economics education and research to the region.  They are the result of the continuing shared vision of our founders, students, faculty, researchers, and administrative staff.

This website seeks both to spread the word of CERGE-EI's mission and accomplishments as well as to provide economists and students of economics with access to the breadth of CERGE-EI's research output.  I invite you to explore this site and also to plan to visit us when you are in Prague.  Simply contact the Department of Public Relations to arrange a tour of our facilities or meet our scholars.
