Eligibility for Study
Graduates and students who will receive by September a Bachelor’s degree in economics, mathematics, financial mathematics, statistics, physics, or related fields are eligible to apply for the Joint Master program. A strong background in mathematics is necessary for a successful completion of the program. For examples of topics in mathematics that the applicants should be familiar with, please, consult the content of the undergraduate mathematics and statistics courses at IES. A previous background in economics is not required but would be a big plus. Applicants must be sufficiently competent in English such that they can comprehend all class instruction and reading material and write exams and class papers in English.
In order to provide future students with a common background on which to build the graduate study, CERGE-EI gives intensive training during the summer Preparatory Semester in intermediate microeconomics, macroeconomics, and mathematics.

Admissions Process
Students applying from IES proceed to section "Specific Rules for IES Students".
- Students take the first term of the admission exam at the IES (June).
- After the admission exams, the selected students are admitted to the Master's program at IES.
- As a general rule, the students who apply to the Joint Masters program are expected to enroll into the summer Preparatory Semester at CERGE-EI. The Preparatory Semester takes place in late June – August before the start of each academic year and allows CERGE-EI to provide future students with a common background on which to build their graduate study. Students receive intensive training in intermediate microeconomics, macroeconomics, and mathematics. Students with strong prior background and good performance on the admission exam may be exempted from taking all courses in the Preparatory Semester. For example, math graduates don't have to take the math courses but would take only English. Applicants will be notified whether they are required to take some or all Preparatory Semester courses by the end of April.
- At the end of the Preparatory Semester students who succeed at the Preparatory Semester exams are offered admission to the Joint Masters in Economics option. Those who are not admitted to the Joint Masters in Economics still remain admitted in the Master's program “Economic Theory” at IES and pursue that program without taking the PhD courses at CERGE-EI.
Special Rules for IES Students
The admission procedure is greatly simplified for students obtaining their Bachelor's degree from the IES.
- The students follow the procedure for transferring from the Bachelor's to Master's program at the IES.
- Students who are admitted to the Master’s program at IES and intend to take the Joint Masters in Economics option should email the Application Supplement and their Transcript of Records to the CERGE-EI Student Affairs office, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The deadline is August 20.
- CERGE-EI will consider the applications and will notify the applicants in early September whether they are offered admission to the Joint Masters in Economics option. In the past, all students successfully completing the Bachelor's degree in Economics at IES were admitted to the Joint Masters in Economics option.
- The admission is conditional on receiving the Bachelor's degree by the beginning of the academic year.
