This CD-ROM contains scanned copies of bibliographic descriptions of prints in foreign languages produced by the printing houses located on the territory of today‘s Czech Republic in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is the result of a bibliographic survey undertaken in the mid-1950s. Its execution is discussed in greater detail in the introductory text to “Bibliography of Bohemian Prints in Foreign Languages from the Period of 1501-1800“, which includes a list of the library holdings that were examined for the “Bibliography of Bohemian Prints in Foreign Languages from the Period of 1501-1800” as well as a list of studies and reports on its preparation, inclusive of the monographs that were written with a more extensive use of the material from the yet unpublished “Bibliography of Bohemian Prints in Foreign Languages from the Period of 1501-1800”.

The individual foreign-language editions of Bohemian books are arranged alphabetically by author’s name or, if the work is anonymous, by the first noun in the nominative. Since the copies of notations are only pictorial and do not lend themselves to full-text searching, the bibliographic descriptions were supplemented, as an auxiliary measure, by a tentative printers’ index arranged by proper names. This at least facilitates the searches focusing on the history of specific printing houses. To aid in searching for data on book printing in certain locations, the person-based printers’ index was coupled with an index of printing houses arranged by the names of their localities. The attached bibliographic summary shows the current results of these investigations, presented as a selective list of basic studies published on the history of book printing within the confines of today’s Czech Republic during the 16th and 17th centuries.

By doing that, the Academy of Sciences Library accommodates the scientific community and gives access to a large portion of the yet unpublished bibliographic data. Since the systematic and painstaking editing and conversion of these data into an electronic database or a book form tries the patience of the individuals waiting for the information, they can now page through the copies of uncorrected bibliographic descriptions as in a catalogue, and even contribute to the emerging bibliography with their comments and observations. The bibliographers welcome any collegial suggestion. The 16th and 17th century prints will be followed by a CD-ROM with foreign-language Bohemian prints from the 18th century. By publishing the uncorrected version of “Bibliography of Bohemian Prints in Foreign Languages”, the Academy of Sciences Library does not relinquish any rights of ownership with regards to the presented bibliographic material and its subsequent publication in any form.

The CD-ROM resulted from completed project K3077601 Basic research program in the key areas of science supported by the Academy of Sciences, Area No. 28.
