Historical Book Collection of the Academy of Sciences Library

Compared to other major libraries, the Academy of Sciences Library has a smaller quantity of rare prints in its collections. Consigned to a special depository are manuscripts, early printed books and archival documents, about 100 each, and some 25,000 volumes from the 16th-18th century, some of them extending into the 1850s. Although historical holdings of the ASL do not exactly parallel the development of the library itself, they are, by virtue of their content, a significant part of the national literary heritage. In the ASL, in spite of its relatively “young” age (operations commenced 1 January 1953), one may encounter books that originated in a distant past long before the library’s founding date. Some of them come from the scientific institutions that were closed when the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences was established in 1952, and whose libraries were combined into a new Main Library of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. These were the libraries of the Czech Royal Society of Sciences (1784-1952), the Czech Academy of Arts and Sciences (1890-1952), and the Masaryk Academy of Work (1920-1952). To this day, each of these collections reflects the story of its origin and growth, its professional methodologies and research activities. They also constitute a large reservoir of resources for the history of science, having been the recipients of scientific literature published in and out of the country during their time. The libraries actually transcended the dateline of their institution’s founding right from the beginning, for example through bequests of personal libraries of scientists, by means of which the holdings were enriched with books of prior centuries. Many rare prints found their way into the library of the Czech Royal Society of Sciences from the estate of its first secretary Tobiáš Gruber who had acquired them in 1806, and from the collection of František Kadeřávek, a professor of descriptive geometry and stereotomy at the Czech Technical University in Prague (died 1961), who had purchased a number of old prints from the library of the Thun-Hohenstein family of Děčín in an auction in 1933.

In the years of 1953-1967, the Main Library increased the number of the oldest books by antiquarian purchases and acquisitions of various estates and closed historical libraries. The ASL historical collection, as it stands today, is therefore remarkably varied, especially when it comes to manuscripts and archival items. We are faced with an unexpected range of subjects and styles, from a 13th-century New Testament in Greek to a 1960-66 collection of hand-painted coats-of-arms by Břetislav Schuster. According to a printed list from the 1980s, there were 786 interesting publications from the 16th-century printing houses among the old prints. Approximately 50% more prints at ASL come from the 17th century. Despite the variety of content and the fact that this is not a "historically grown" collection, it may be said that the ASL old prints represent an enlightening cross-section of the printed and literary output of the 16th-18th century. Aside from the already mentioned List of the 16th Century Prints, this is also evident from CD-ROM "Printer´s and Publisher´s devices from the 16th and 17th Centuries in prints from the Holdings of the Academy of Sciences Library" issued in 2002, and from the outcome of project “Digitalization of Signed Illustrations in Prints from the Period of 1501-1750 in the Academy of Sciences Library Holdings”.
