This book (Do We Read? Czech Citizens and Their Attitude to the Book) deals with Czech reading culture in the present day. It is divided into four parts (encompassing fourteen chapters altogether): (1) “Frames” (readers. reading, and how to investigate them, terminology, three generations of Czech readers today, education and its key role for reading); (2) “The Book” (reading and buying books, typology of readers, libraries); (3) “Time” (reading and leisure time, reading and working time); and (4) “Values” (reading and its connections to values and motivations, reading habits, comparison with other countries, survey respondents and their private utterances about books and reading). What follows are conclusions providing a global interpretation, mainly in terms of socio-demographic variables as well as in terms of several types of readers. This book deals with statistical data acquired through a survey conducted by the Institute for Czech Literature — Czech Academy of Sciences and the National Library of the Czech Republic. Th e survey questioned a representative sample of the whole Czech population aged 15 years and over, comprising 1 551 anonymous respondents (statistical variation 2,5 %), between May 25 and June 16, 2007, using standard questionnaires (face-to-face interviews of 38 questions; the average interview was 30 minutes long); the survey can be considered highly communicative and non-confl ictual (the response rate was 66 %).The 2007 survey focused on libraries (their attendance and services) in particular. Our intention is to repeat the survey every three years, using the same methodology, but with a changing focus on diff erent aspects of the reading culture (libraries, fi ction, book market, reading and lifestyle, etc.).
