Jan Kmenta received his B.Ec with First Class Honors from the University of Sydney, Australia in 1955 and graduated from Stanford University with a Ph.D. in Economics with a minor in Statistics in 1964. Since 1989 he also holds an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Saarland, Germany. He joined the University of Michigan as a Full Professor in 1973.

Holds a Ph.D. degree (1964) and an M.A. degree (1959) from Stanford University, U.S.A. In 1955 he earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics with First Class Honours from the University of Sydney, Australia. Since 1973 a Professor of Economics and Statistics at the University of Michigan, U.S.A. In 1989 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Saarland, Germany, and in 1998 he was the first recipient of the Karel Engliš Medal from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association (1973-1979 and 1985-1992), Associate Editor of the Review of Economics and Statistics (1975-1992), Associate Editor of Metrika (1981-1985). Since 1984 he is a member of the editorial board of Statistische Hefte/Statistical Papers. He has been a member of the American Economic Association, the American Statistical Association (Fellow), the Econometric Society (Fellow), and the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences in America. In 2007 he received an annual award from the Czech Society of Economic for long-term contribution to the development of teaching of economics in the Czech Republic. At present a Visiting Professor at CERGE-EI, Prague.
