Seven Years of CZELO - seven presentations, seven minutes each

The CZELO office will celebrate its seven years anniversary on 30 May 2012 in Brussels. On this occasion, six European and regional centres of excellence that are currently being build in the Czech Republic with the financial support from Structural Funds and SYLICA project demonstrating the synergies between SF and FP7, will be presented. Czech Academy joins JRC initiative on scientific support to Danube strategy

The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic has joined today the JRC initiative to provide scientific support to the Danube strategy. The President of this Academy, Jiří Drahoš, and the JRC Director General, Dominique Ristori, signed the agreement in the context of a high-level conference organised in Brussels. The conference brought together 100 attendees, among whom policy makers, the scientists and interested stakeholders, including Maroš Šefčovič, vice president of the European Commission. Attendees discussed key challenges in implementing the EU Danube strategy during this meeting, focusing on the four pillars of the initiative: environmental protection, irrigation and agricultural development, navigability and energy production. The need for better European governance in the area, as already identified by the European Council was also addressed, and concrete cooperation and coordination actions were discussed.

The 19th Annual Conference of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists will be held in Prague on June 27-30, 2012. The conference is jointly organized by the Environment Center of Charles University in Prague and the University of Economics. The conference will cover all areas of environmental and natural resource economics and is held under the patronage of Mr. Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Petr Nečas, the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Mr. Bohuslav Svoboda, the Mayor of Prague and the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic.

The symposium Toward New Frontiers

The Institute of Microbiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, v. v. i., celebrates the 50th anniversary of foundation this year and in the frame of the celebrations a special Day of Immunology will take place on April 23, 2012. This one-day symposium entitled "Day of Immunology 2012: Toward New Frontiers" will be dedicated to the memory of Professor Jaroslav Šterzl, MD., DrSc., the founder of modern Czechoslovak immunology, who passed away on April 8, 2012, one month short of his 87th birthday. The journal Nature Physics published the discovery of scientists from the joint Laboratory of Opto-Spintronics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University and the Institute of Physics, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

150th Anniversary of the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists

The Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists – one of the oldest learned societies in Czech lands existing to this day – celebrated 150 th anniversary of the foundation. By the occasion of this important anniversary, the Union organized on March 28, 2012 at Karolinum, the seat of the Charles University, the festive ceremony, which was attended by outstanding personalities headed by the President of the Czech Republic Václav Klaus. According to him the prestige of mathematics has declined: “The declining prestige of mathematics is linked to the decline in educational standards, caused by the opening of a massive chance for students to gain university diplomas in dubious study branches that do not include mathematics.”

EURAXESS Czech Republic helps foreign scientists

The Centre of Administration and Operations of the ASCR and EURAXESS Czech Republic held the press conference on March 26, 2012 to present the initiative, which helps European and Non-European researchers as they move about in Europe and support scientific organizations in their search for a research talent. EURAXESS provides a unique access point to information across all countries including network of centers offering personalized assistance to researcher’s moving to another country.

The call for the European Young Researchers' Award 2012

The European Young Researchers’ Award (EYRA) is granted every year to researchers demonstrating outstanding research performance. At the same time, the award aims to inspire early stage researchers and experienced researchers to incorporate a European dimension and perspective into their research. Cool Math

The Institute for Social and Economic Analyses (ISEA) launched a project called Cool Math. The goal of the project is threefold: to increase awareness of society about the emerging problem of deteriorating results of Czech students in mathematics; to identify good practices in teaching math that increase both math skills and popularity of math among pupils; and to convey information about such practices to other teachers.

Jiří Homola promoted to SPIE Fellow

Jiří Homola is a leading researcher in the area of optical biosensors and, in particular, biosensors based on surface plasmons. His expertise is multidisciplinary spanning the theoretical and experimental investigation of photonic/plasmonic nanostructures, design and development of novel optical sensor platforms, development of methods for interfacing optical sensor platforms with biological and artificial receptors, and development of detection methodologies for specific bioanalytical applications.
