6th European Congress of Mathematics: July 2-7, 2012 in Krakow (Poland)

On Monday, July 2, the doors opened to the 6th European Congress of Mathematics in the beautiful historic city of Krakow in Poland. Since 1992, the European Mathematical Society invites every four years mathematicians from all over the world to this important event. Previous congresses have been held in Paris, Budapest, Barcelona, Stockholm and Amsterdam. This year, the congress is organized by colleagues from the Polish Mathematical Society and the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, chaired by Prof Stefan Jackowski (Warsaw). The scientific programme has been arranged by international Scientific Committee chaired by Prof. Eduard Feireisl (Institute of Mathematics AS CR). The Polish President, Mr. Bronislaw Komorowski has accepted the honorary patronage for the congress.

Close to 1.000 mathematicians are expected to participate in the congress that is taking place over a whole week at the Auditorium Maximum of the Jagellionian University. During the opening ceremony on Monday morning a total of 12 prizes installed by the European Mathematical Society were awarded by EMS President Prof Marta Sanz-Solé (Barcelona, Spain) to laureates selected by three prize committees.

The monetary value of each prize is 5000 Euro. All prize winners have been invited to deliver lectures at 6ECM.

The 8th Eduard Čech Lecture: Hans Triebel, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena

Title: Function spaces: past, present, future

Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at 2 p.m., in the main lecture hall of the Institute of Mathematics

Abstract: We describe how classical and recent instruments and techniques in the theory of function spaces evolved over the time:
1. Derivatives and differences, Sobolev, Nikol’skij-Besov, 1930s–1960s
2. Fourier-analytical instruments, 1960s–1970s
3. Interpolation, 1960s, 1970s
4. Building blocks (atoms, wavelets), 1990s, up to our time
5. Merging with Morrey type spaces, our time

The distiguished Eduard Čech Lectures held to commemorate the one of the most eminent Czech mathematicians and founder of the Institute are directed to a general mathematical audience.

Differential Equations - Stochastic & Deterministic, Prague, June 13-14, 2011

Ivo Vrkoč celebrated his eightieth birthday on June 10, 2011. On this occasion, Ivo’s former students and recent coauthors decided to organise a small colloquium devoted to some of the topics Ivo has contributed to significantly, namely the qualitative theory of ordinary differential equations and stochastic analysis. The colloquium will be held in the Institute of Information Theory and Automation AS CR in Praha. Honouring his significant life work the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic awarded Ivo Vrkoč the Bernard Bolzano Honorary Medal for Merit in the Mathematical Sciences.
