Macrocycles are important class of compounds found in natural products as well as in fully synthetic constructs. Perhaps the most interesting feature of macrocycles is their capability of formation of complexes with a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds. This has lead to widespread use of macrocycles such as crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, resorcinarenes (to list a few…) in industries (namely pharmaceutical and cosmetic), catalysis, extractions, analytical chemistry (sensors) etc. Our group is involved in projects spanning from the preparation of new macrocycles via covalent and – in particular – dynamic covalent bonds to their use as building blocks for larger molecular scaffolds or for the construction of organocatalysts. |
