Abstrakt:
In the present work, we studied differences in salt stress response among two parental maize genotypes and their hybrid of the first filial (F1) generation. We determined their membrane stability index; the contents of photosynthetic pigments, superoxide radical, Na+, proline and sugars and the activities of ascorbate peroxidase, catalase and glutathione reductase. The F1 generation PEHM 3 showed the highest membrane stability index and chlorophyll content together with the lowest superoxide radical and Na+ contents. After crossing comparatively sensitive CM 142 with tolerant CM 213, the F1 generation PEHM 3 showed heterosis as it attained the highest membrane stability index and chlorophyll content together with the lowest superoxide radical and Na+ contents. Although PEHM 3 did not show the best antioxidant protection or the highest sugars or proline contents, it could be concluded that PEHM 3 hybrid might be better equipped to cope with salinity stress compared to both parental lines.
Although PEHM 3 did not show the best antioxidant protection or the highest sugar or proline contents, heterotic effect, indicated by better response of PEHM 3 to salinity stress, occurred after crossing of comparatively sensitive CM 142 with tolerant CM 213 parental lines.
