President Barack Obama aboard landed at the Ruzyne airport in Prague this morning where he and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev will sign a new nuclear arms reduction treaty later today. In the evening Obama, who returns to Prague after a year, is to meet representatives of 11 Central and Eastern European countries, and on Friday he is to meet Czech President Vaclav Klaus. In April 2009, Obama attended the U.S.-EU summit in Prague, held during the Czech Republic’s EU presidency. He also gave his first public address abroad in Prague, in which he presented his vision of a world without nuclear weapons. This is why today’s signing of the new arms reduction treaty with Russia exactly in Prague has a certain symbolic character. Obama is expected to reassure them that the new START will not change the U.S. relations with their countries.
President Václav Klaus and Prime Minister Jan Fischer will attend the meeting with Obama on behalf of the Czech Republic. President of the Academy of the Sciences of the Czech Republic professor Jiří Drahoš will also attend the signing of the new nuclear reduction treaty.
