Red glare over Prague: the experimental free-space optical
communication link was tested in 1966 using our He-Ne lasers
on about 12 km distance. The He-Ne laser at 632.8 nm was
developed in the Institute in June 1964.
Jiří Tolman, inventor of a method for accurate time
comparison using television synchronising pulses. In the
pre-GPS era this method was used all over the world.
Ammonia maser – its launch on 26 March 1963 was a breakthrough
event in the field of laser physics in Czechoslovakia.
Optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) – one of the measurement
devices developed in IREE for optical communications in the 1980s.
Ruby-laser ophtalmocoagulator – the first successful laser
eye operation in Czechoslovakia was performed in Institute
of Radio Engineering and Electronics (IREE) in 1967. Using
four sets of apparatus installed in Prague (2x), Most and
Bratislava, thousands of people have been treated.
