Preparation of rare earth doped phase separated materials is of
practical importance due to their improved luminescence properties and
application in 3D displays, tunable infrared phosphors, light frequency
upconversion lasers etc. However, such materials have been fabricated
so-far by using double-crucible technique based on multicomponent
optical glasses and not on high-silica based materials. Therefore, this
project is aimed at design and development of methods for preparation of
Er-doped ZrO2 nano-crystalline phase separated silica materials within
cores of optical fibers by implementing conventional MCVD method coupled
with the solution doping technique. This implementation will result into
new knowledge on the preparation of optical fibers with enhanced
spectral performance, i.e. high levels of Er fluorescence and low
optical losses.
