Self-consistent polarized radiative transfer: Connecting theory and observations
Abstract: In the stellar atmospheres, state of matter at different points of the plasmas is non-linearly coupled by radiation transfer. Multiple processes leave their fingerprints in polarization state of light (scattering, collisions, magnetic fields, etc.). Polarization is thus a key observable providing invaluable information on the local physical conditions. Direct inversion of the physical quantities is often mathematically ill defined but a comparison of the observations with sufficiently realistic models provides suitable quantitative diagnostics and constrains of our models. I will briefly review the processes involved in the non-LTE polarized radiative transfer problem and I will show how is the ongoing research in this field related to the present and future space experiments in solar physics.

Dále pořádáme menší semináře jednotlivých oddělení:

Emerging opportunities for high-performance computing in astrophysics: European HPC infrastructure PRACE
Abstract: Thanks to the recently founded national HPC centre "IT4Innovations" which is currently being built at the Institute of Geonics ASCR and TU Ostrava, Czech Republic became a member of pan-european HPC infrastructure PRACE. This brings also new possibilities in computational astrophysics. In the talk I shall introduce the PRACE infrastructure and its multi-layer structure providing various classes of HPC resources. Then, I will summarize the possibilities which we have in applications for CPU time, various types of calls, project requirements, reporting accepted projects and other practical issues.

Zářivě-(magneto)hydrodynamické semináře

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope
Abstract: The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will be a large-aperture, wide-field, ground-based telescope designed to provide deep images of half of the total sky in six optical colors every few nights. As such it will enable a wide variety of diverse astronomical investigations, ranging from making a census of small moving objects in the solar system, to mapping the outer regions of our Milky Way galaxy. Of particular interest for cosmology and fundamental physics, LSST will provide tight constraints on the nature of dark energy through a range of statistical analyses of the shapes and distributions of billions of galaxies out to moderate to high redshift. This project was recently ranked as the highest priority new ground-based astronomical facility by a committee of the US National Academy of Sciences. I will review the basic considerations that have led to the design of the LSST, and discuss a sampling of the exciting science opportunities that will be enabled by its construction.
