Fyzikální ústav AV ČR, v. v. i. (FZÚ) je veřejná výzkumná instituce, zaměřená na základní, ale i aplikovaný výzkum v oblasti fyziky. Zřizovatelem FZÚ je Akademie věd České republiky.

Současný program ústavu zahrnuje pět oblastí: fyziku elementárních částic, kondenzovaných systémů a pevných látek, optiku a fyziku plazmatu, kterým odpovídá členění do vědeckých sekcí.

An international team of researchers has reported an experimental demonstration of a transistor whose functionality is based on electron’s spin. The work was published in the December 24th issue of the Science journal. The team is formed by physicists from the Academy of Sciences and Charles University in the Czech Republic, the Hitachi Cambridge Laboratory and University of Cambridge and Nottingham in the UK, and Texas A&M University in the US.

On Sunday August 22, 2010 Prof. Jiří Niedele, a long-term member of the research staff of the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, passed away after a lengthy illness. It is a great loss for us, his colleagues, the Institute of Physics, as well as for the whole mathematical physics and particle physics community.
