Research activities

  • Medical informatics and biostatistics provide comprehensive support of interdisciplinary biomedical research and contribute to the implementation of evidence-based medicine.
  • Medical informatics is primarily engaged in providing information sources for medical research, carrying out search of scientific medical information, exploiting the Internet in biomedical research, supporting research into and implementation of electronic medical guidelines and decision support in medicine and health care. It is also part of IT security research in biomedicine.
  • Biostatistics is involved in statistical research with applications in clinical and forensic medicine, epidemiology and genetics. It deals with the design of medical studies, including the methods of collecting and checking data integrity. It also includes designing methodologies and specialised statistical tests and subsequent testing of the target medical hypotheses. Furthermore, it is concerned with studying modifications of advanced statistical methods in situations where the usual assumptions are not met, for example, in researching the genetic predisposition of serious civilisation diseases. Research areas of interest cover particularly the survival analysis, development of robust multivariate statistical methods for gene expression analysis, image analysis, measurement reliability and stochastic approaches to personal identification.
  • The Department also provides teaching of Medical Statistics at undergraduate and graduate level and exercises a long term committment to providing quality textbooks for teaching medical informatics and biostatistics.
