Ladislav Kavan graduated in inorganic chemistry from the Faculty of Science, Charles University, Prague (1974) where he received a degree CSc (Candidate of Sciences) in 1978. Since 1979 he has worked in the J. Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (now the J. Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic). At the Institute, he was a deputy head and/or a member of the Scientific Council (1997–2003) and a vice-director in 2001–2002. Presently, he is a member of the Board of the Institute (since 2007; vice-chairman since 2012) and the head of the Department of Electrochemical Materials (since 2006). He had passed several research internships at the Leibniz Institute of Solid State and Materials Research in Dresden, the Fritz-Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), where he was awarded by a visiting professorship in 1988. In 2006, he received a degree DSc (Doctor of Sciences) in physical chemistry. He has been holding various teaching appointments at the Faculty of Science, Charles University, Prague, where he was a member of the Scientific Council (2006–2009). In 2002, he became a full professor of inorganic chemistry at the Charles University.
