Head of the department: PhDr. Ivana Boháčová, Ph.D.
This department’s programme encompasses the archeology of the 6th to 16th century, but mainly concentrates on the study of the development of settlement forms and relevant material culture. Current projects are concerned with the beginnings of the early Middle ages (early Slav period), with early medieval strongholds castles and in addition with the archeology of towns, castles of the High Middle Ages, monasteries and villages. A natural part of the program is the study of the medieval landscape. The members of departments are responsible for issuing several series of publications: Castellologica Bohemica, Mediaevalia archaeologica and the international miscellany Ruralia (part of the Památky archeologické – supplementa series).
An important part of the department’s activities represents the interdisciplinary research. For evaluating and analyzing of archaeological sources are also used advanced evidence and documentation technologies. Within the structure of the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Prague, v.v.i. the department takes part in the care of archaeological monuments. Members of the scientific staff participate in the educational and popularization activities of the Institute.
Within the department also an Intergraph Registered Research Laboratory is operating, focused on the elaboration of some new documentation procedures based on GIS for the processing of long-time excavated sites.
