My current affilliation is at the University of Bergen (Norway) where I make a use of the ICP-MS lab equipped with the latest instruments for isotopic analysis of geological materials - Single collector, double focusing magnetic sector ICP-mass spectrometer (Thermo Finnigan Element 2) and Multi-collector, double focusing magnetic sector ICP-mass spectrometer (Thermo Finnigan Neptune) conected to two laser systems - the older New Wave UP-213 system and the brand new Resonetics excimer laser (193 nm) with the specially deisgned low-volume ablation cell.

>My current research is focused on the evolution of the Jan Mayen microcontinent and the outstanding issues of the detrital provenance studies in general. I am especially interested in improving the reliability of source identification from study of the heavy mineral fraction in the sediments. Currently I am working with artificial clastic sediment which was seeded with several zircon population of known quantity in order to observe how the resulting U-Pb age patterns differ from the real (seeded) age pattern. The aim of this experiment is to assess reliability of the current analytical practices that are used in sedimentary provenance studies. Recently, I have also been working on provenance of clastic sedimentary rocks from Norwegian continental margin, Jan Mayen area as well as the eastern margin of Greenland.

Ongoing and future projects:

  • Study of the zircon provenance of the metamorphosed Variscan rocks in Central Europe (Bohemian Massif)
  • Petrology, geochemistry and evolution of the Kaoko Belt in Namibia and its relationship to the South American counterpart
  • Reliability of the zircon detrital provenance studies - experimental approach
  • Hf isotopes in zircon - complex behaviour, age of crystallization vs. origin of the rocks
  • Detrital provenance of Neoproterozolic to Cretaceous sedimentary sequences of the eastern margin of Greenland
  • Evolution of the Jan Mayen microcontinent

The other topics studied in past are listed below:

  • Structure, emplacement, and tectonic setting of Late Devonian granitoid plutons in the Tepla–Barrandian unit, Bohemian Massif
  • Investigation of the Sm-Nd isotopic system in accessory minerals by laser ablation MC-ICP-MS technique with potential for mineral single-grain Sm-Nd dating
  • Plesovice zircon - a newly established international zircon reference material for Laser ablation ICP-MS isotopic analyses
  • Partition of trace elements between coexisting minerals in metamorphic rocks and their use in geothermometry
  • Palaeogeographic significance of the roof pendants of the Central Bohemian Plutonic Complex in the Bohemian Massif; sedimentary provenance studies
  • Growth and behaviour of zircon in high-grade metamorphic rocks
