As the Weibel instability is considered as a driver of relativistic shocks, the basics of this instability are presented in the first part of the presentation. The impact of an initial magnetic field is discussed. In the second part, the focus is on shock generation. Simulations have been performed with the kinetic particle-in-cell-code OSIRIS and compared with the magnetohydrodynamic jump conditions, which are used to determine the features of the shock.
