Ultrashort high power laser having a peak power of over petawatt is a very challenging system due to its possible applications in the relativistic light-matter interactions. Here, we will present the output performance of a pettawatt CPA Ti:sapphire laser system developed at APRI. The laser system consists of an ultrashort oscillator, 1-kHz multi-pass amplifier system, grating stretcher, pre-amplifier, two power amplifiers, final booster amplifier, and grating compressor. In the final booster amplifier, the maximum energy of the amplified laser pulse is about 47 J pumped by second harmonic Nd:Glass laser systems which deliver an energy of 96 J in 12-beam lines at a repetition rate of 0.1 Hz. After the amplification, the laser pulses are expanded to 200 mm in diameter and compressed by a grating compressor in vacuum chamber. After the compressor, the laser pulse has energy and pulse duration of about 33 J and 30 fs, respectively. Thus, the peak power reaches 1.1 PW. We will also discuss the recent results on the applications of ultrashort intense laser-matter interactions at APRI such as X-ray laser generation and electron/ion acceleration. These experiments were performed using 100-TW laser pulses produced by the front part of the PW laser system. In addition, our plan for relativistic light-matter interactions using PW laser system will be presented.
