The Institute evolved from the Laboratory of Inorganic Chemistry which was founded in 1956 and converted into an institute in 1959. This Institute was later merged with the former Institute of Inorganic Synthesis of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1972 to form the present Institute.
The Institute carries out basic research in inorganic chemistry and in interdisciplinary fields between inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, solid state physics, ecology, and bioinorganic chemistry.
The work of the Institute is focused on:
  • Research on the preparation, properties and applications of selected inorganic compounds, especially boron hydrides, organo-metal compounds of aluminium and gallium, nanomaterials based on metal oxides, intercalation compounds and special glasses.
  • Study of the kinetics and mechanisms of inorganic and bioinorganic oxidation-reduction reactions, research on glass phase transitions.
