Silicon-Silicide-Silicon multilayer nanoheterostructures for photonics and thermoelectronics applications

Formation of nanosize (5–30 nm) dots of Fe, Cr, Ca, Mn and Mg silicides on Si(111)7x7 and Si(100)2x1 surfaces, silicon growth atop nanosize silicide dots and multilayer repetition of developed growth procedure for all silicides have been carried out in ultra-high vacuum chambers. Optimization of growth parameters has permitted to create monolithic multilayer nanoheterostructures (NHS) with buried nanocrystals (NCs) of Fe, Cr and Mn disilicides and polycrystalline NHS with buried Ca3Si4 and Mg2Si NCs or two-dimensional layers.

5. The long journey to the Higgs boson and beyond at the LHC

Since three years the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), in particular ATLAS, investigate particle physics at the highest collision energies ever achieved in a laboratory. Following a rich harvest of results for Standard Model (SM) Physics came in 2012 the fi rst spectacular discovery of a new, heavy particle, most likely the long-awaited Higgs boson. The latest results with the full data set accumulated over the fi rst three-years running period of the LHC will be presented.
