The Institute was founded on 1 January 1958 under the name of Mining Institute, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. On 1 March 1979 it merged with the Academy’s Institute of Geology to form the Academy’s Institute of Geology and Geotechnics. The Institute was divided into two institutes on 1 March 1990, and the Institute of Geotechnics was established as an Institute within the Academy. Its present name was adopted on 1 January 1994. Pursuant to Act No. 341/2005 Coll., the Institute became a public research institution as of 1 January 2007.
Research is focused on the evaluation of geodynamical processes (both natural and those induced by human activities), investigation of slope stability, recent tectonic and seismotectonic mobility and the Earth’s shell structure, characterisation of selected deposits of mineral resources and the possibility of their utilisation, ecological utilisation of raw materials and disposal of harmful wastes, development of materials from untraditional precursors providing biomaterials, heat-resistant, construction and structural materials.
