Calorimetry at a future high energy electron positron collider

Seminar Thursday, 28/04/2011 15:00 - 16:00

Speakers: Jan Blaha (LAPP Annecy, France)
Place: Main lecture hall, Institute of Physics, Na Slovance 2, Prague 8
Presented in Czech
Organisers: Division of Elementary Particle Physics; Center of Particle Physics

Calorimetry will play a crucial role in determining the physics potential at a future high energy electron-positron collider. Since the majority of the interesting physics processes are characterised by a multi-jet final state, the excellent jet energy resolution is required.
This will be achieved by use of the Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA), a promising technique based on the reconstruction of individual particles in jets, for which the future calorimeters will be optimized. In this seminar, I will give an overview of the detector physics requirements and introduction to the PFA concept. Then I will describe the technological options for electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters, their recent R&D progress and the first test beam results. Finally, I will discuss alternatives to the proposed PFA concept.
