Hlavním cílem projektu je vytvořit český uzel evropské velké distribuované výzkumné infrastruktury Konsorcium evropských sociálněvědních datových archivů CESSDA-ERIC, a zajistit tak zapojení České republiky do vybudování jednotného evropského systému sociálněvědních datových služeb. Centralizované, veřejně přístupné datové archivy patří k základním infrastrukturám pro sociálněvědní výzkum a výuku. Tyto archivy slouží jako platforma pro sdílení dat a výzkumných nástrojů mezi výzkumnými týmy, usnadňují používání dat z vědeckých výzkumů ve vysokoškolské výuce, umožňují kombinaci více datových zdrojů v jednotlivých projektech a prostřednictvím propojování databází přispívají k produkci nového empirického materiálu. Projekt CESSDA byl vybrán v procesu ESFRI a zařazen do ESFRI Roadmap za účelem vytvoření jedné z ústředních výzkumných infrastruktur Evropského výzkumného prostoru. Na základě propojení evropských datových archivů sdružených v současné síti CESSDA nyní vzniká společná datová infrastruktura, která umožní výzkumníkům vyhledávat a získávat socioekonomická data v Evropě v rámci jednotného integrovaného systému vysoce kvalitních datových služeb. CESSDA tím odpovídá na poptávku po datových zdrojích pro evropský komparativní výzkum a významně posiluje podmínky pro dosahování excelence v evropském sociálněvědním výzkumu. Hlavní přínos pro české výzkumníky je v integraci českých dat do kontextu mezinárodních databází, a tedy ve vytvoření datového zdroje pro mezinárodní komparace zahrnující Českou republiku. Dostupnost mezinárodně srovnatelných dat je podmínkou pro orientaci výzkumu na mezinárodní excelenci a zároveň východiskem pro účast v mnoha projektech programů EU a dalších mezinárodních programů.
