BIOCEV

The Dictionary of Medieval Latin in Bohemia and Moravia - Latinitatis medii aevi lexicon Bohemorum forms a part of an international target directed by the International Academical Union residing in Brussels. The Dictionary records medieval Latin vocabulary used in Bohemia and Moravia in the period from the beginnings of Latin Literature in this region (about 1000) till the year 1500. The material (750 000 excerpted items) was drawn from sources of different character (diplomatic, official, belles-lettres, scientific literature etc.) of Czech provenance and illustrates the extent and variety of literary Latin of the Czech Middle Ages completely and instructively. Besides printed sources, many manuscripts and old prints from the holdings of Czech libraries and archives were excerpted, consequently great lexicographical wealth have been made open to researchers that otherwise would remain hidden in the inedited monuments. Especially precious for the knowledge of the mediaeval way of thinking are quotations drawn from tract wrintings, libri civitatum, and numerous Czech and German equivalents drawn from glossaries.

The articles are explained in Latin and Czech, the Latin part of the explanation being a definition, the Czech one mostly a translation. The Dictionary is to be used by Czech and foreign scholars working in all branches of medieval studies. Up to the present day two volumes of the Dictionary (letters A-C, D-H) and four issues of the third volume (up to the entry limitanter) have been published. The Dictionary thus reached a second half of its final extent.
