PhDr. Antonín Kostlán, CSc. Education and academic qualifications: Graduated from the Philosophical Faculty of the Charles University in Prague (history and archival studies, 1974–80). 1980 PhDr in History, Charles University Prague, 1989 CSc./PhD in Czech history, Institute for Czechoslovak and World History of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences.

Professional experience: He worked at the National Trades Union Archives in Prague (archivist 1980–82), the Institute for Czechoslovak and World History of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (research student 1983–85, specialist staff member 1986–89, research worker 1989–91), the Archives of the ASCR (1992–95 research worker, 1995–2001 director) and the Institute for Contemporary History of the ASCR (since 2002 research worker). 2000–04 Head of Research Centre for the History of Sciences and Humanities, 2003–05 Director of the Archival and Correspondence Department of the Office of the President of the Czech Republic. Since 2009 Head of the Centre for the History of Sciences of the Institute for Contemporary History of the ASCR.

Teaching activities: Lectured at the Charles University Philosophical Faculty (1990–92, since 2007), Institute for the Foundations of Education (1993–95); and at the Pedagogical Faculty of the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň (1996–99).

Specializes in the following subjects: the social and economic history of the early modern age; the history of mentalities and intellectual life of the early modern age, the history of science and scholarly institutions (16th–20th century); the history of historiography (16th–20th century).

Scholarly posts: Vice President of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (1990–92), member of the Academic Board of the Charles University Social Sciences Faculty (1992–93), member of the Academic Board of the ASCR Grant Agency (1993–94), Vice President of the Supervisory Board of the Institute for Contemporary History of the ASCR (since 2007).

Membership of editorial boards: Folia historica Bohemica (since 1989), History and the Present (1990–2005), History of Sciences and Technology (1993–2000), Acta Comeniana (since 1994), History – Theory – Criticism (since 2004), Academical Bulletin of the ASCR (since 2005).
