Těžko uvěřit, že letos na podzim je tomu již deset let, co Akademie věd České republiky prezentuje výsledky vědeckých výzkumů prostřednictvím Týdne vědy a techniky. Z někdejších Dnů otevřených dveří, které v letech 1998–2000 přivedly na akademická pracoviště tisíce návštěvníků, se popularizační činnost naší největší výzkumné instituce rozrostla až do podoby jedinečné týdenní přehlídky zahrnující přednášky, akademické kavárny, semináře, workshopy, konference či poutavé expozice. Během deseti let se program TVT rozšířil do nejrůznějších částí Česka a kromě Prahy se jím mohli studenti a veřejnost těšit také v Brně, Českých Budějovicích, Hradci Králové, Plzni, Olomouci či Ostravě. Jubilejní ročník se konal ve dnech 1.–7. listopadu 2010 a nesl se v duchu Mezinárodního roku biodiverzity, když poukazoval na různorodost i nezastupitelnost všech vědních oborů a rozsáhlou škálu témat, jimiž se vědci v Akademii zabývají.

Pozoruhodné výsledky svých výzkumů představili na výstavách v hlavní budově AV ČR například vědci z Ústavu fyzikální chemie J. Heyrovského AV ČR či z Archeologického ústavu AV ČR, Brno.
K dlouholetému generálnímu partnerovi Týdne vědy a techniky, společnosti ČEZ, a. s., jež návštěvníkům TVT otevřela vodní elektrárny Želina u Kadaně a Střekov, se letos poprvé připojil Nadační fond Karla Janečka na podporu vědy a výzkumu a společnost RSJ Algorithmic Trading, a. s., která přispěla sérií přednášek Nové cesty ve vědě. Prezentace zprostředkovala pohled na nové možnosti současné vědy a zároveň nabídla příležitost k mezioborovému setkání a výměně informací v podání význačných odborníků, jako byli např. prof. Oldřich Vašíček, prof. Jaroslav Nešetřil, prof. Jiří Bártek či prof. Jan Kmenta. Cílem nově vzniklého fondu Karla Janečka je podpora projektů především základního vědeckého výzkumu v oblasti matematiky, ekonomie a medicíny.
Ve výčtu spolupracujících institucí nechybějí tradiční souputníci TVT: Městská knihovna v Praze, British Council, AMVIS, Kriminalistický ústav Praha, Muzeum Policie ČR, Hvězdárna a planetárium Johanna Palisy, Národní divadlo, Technická univerzita v Ostravě, společnost CESNET a další.
Mutanti nemusejí být jen zákeřné obludy! Vědcům mohou naopak pomáhat při výzkumu, jak ukázala výstava, kterou připravil Ústav experimentální botaniky AV ČR.
Ani letos nezůstaly stranou zájmu oblíbené Dny otevřených dveří. Například ostravský Institut geologického inženýrství HGF VŠB-TU připravil pro studenty komentovanou prohlídku mineralogické, petrografické a paleontologické sbírky a kolekce nerostných surovin. Historie sbírek, které jsou soustředěny v Geologickém pavilonu prof. Františka Pošepného (jednoho z tvůrců světové ložiskové geologie), sahá až do roku 1849; aktuálně expozice zahrnuje okolo 15 000 vystavených exponátů. Program doplnila také přednáška dr. Davida Uličného z Geofyzikálního ústavu AV ČR, který se studenty hovořil o změnách hladiny oceánů v historii Země, roli klimatu a pohybech zemské kůry. V Olomouci Ústav experimentální botaniky AV ČR připravil exkurze, na nichž se zájemci dozvěděli např. o mezinárodním projektu luštění dědičné informace pšenice, jak se hledají konkrétní úseky DNA na chromozomech metodou „svítícího“ (fluorescenčního) značení nebo jak se připravují mikroskopické preparáty. Jejich brněnští kolegové z Botanického ústavu AV ČR se vydali na výpravu za biodiverzitou sinic a řas a za pozoruhodným světem vody pod mikroskopem. Pražští archeologové pozvali veřejnost na podnětnou prohlídku lokalit, kde realizují dlouhodobé terénní výzkumy (hradiště Stará Boleslav, Vyšehrad, bazilika sv. Petra a Pavla), a na návštěvu keramické laboratoře. Zájemci mohli poznat práci vědců celkem na 37 akademických pracovištích.
Bez jedné sto přednášek připravili organizátoři v české metropoli. Přednáškový maraton v hlavní budově AV ČR na Národní třídě zahájil prof. František Vyskočil na téma Mozek a jeho (s)mysl – kvantový a nekvantový přenos na synapsi. Věděli jste, že nervová soustava má okolo 100 miliard neuronů a že Mléčná dráha má podobný počet hvězd? Do Oválné studovny Knihovny AV ČR přilákala studenty možnost nahlédnout do světa kramářských písní – literárního žánru na pomezí lidové tvorby a umělecké poe-zie, jenž nám zprostředkovávají pohled do mysli většinou prostých čtenářů a posluchačů – v přednášce Jaká hrůza k poslouchání: pohromy a Boží znamení v kramářských tiscích Mgr. Ivy Bydžovské z Knihovny Národního muzea. Poznat jsme mohli také např. tajuplný svět rostlin v prezentaci dr. Jana Petráška z Ústavu experimentální botaniky AV ČR, který na fotografiích a videích ukázal, že rostliny žijí až překvapivě „akčním“ životem. Kaleidoskop přednášek, jichž se v Praze zúčastnilo téměř pět tisíc studentů, nemohl 5. listopadu skončit příjemněji, totiž výletem do renesanční Anglie v podání prof. Martina Hilského, který před zaplněnou posluchárnou četl a komentoval své překlady Shakespearových sonetů, zatímco klavírista Daniel Dobiáš je hudebně interpretoval formou výrazového šansonu. O den dříve se mohli příznivci charismatického překladatele pro změnu těšit v Brně a Olomouci z přednášky o Shakespearových šašcích v kontextu anglické a evropské renesance.
Komponovaný pořad Shakespearových sonetů v podání Martina Hilského a za klavírního doprovodu Daniela Dobiáše pozval posluchače do renesanční Anglie.
V Městské knihovně na Mariánském náměstí vysvětloval prof. Václav Pačes studentům, jak se vyvinul člověk, kde spočívá podstata našeho lidství a čím se vlastně lišíme od lidoopů a od bakterií. Stranou nezůstalo ani aktuální téma znalosti lidského genomu a jejího vlivu na léčbu „šitou na míru“ jednotlivým pacientům. Na stejném místě se konala přednáška Různorodost zdrojů energie aneb Michaelův energetický koktejl, kterou připravil Michael Londesborough z Ústavu anorganické chemie AV ČR.
Inspirativní přednášky a prezentace hostilo Muzeum Policie ČR. Studenti se zde dozvěděli např. o nových postupech forenzní mikroanalýzy, jak kriminalisté pracují v antropologické kriminalistické laboratoři nebo o moderních analytických technikách, jako je např. Ramanova spektroskopie.
Rozmanité přednášky nabídly prostory Ústavu pro českou literaturu AV ČR. Na téma Pitná voda – znečištění zdrojů a technologie výroby zde např. hovořil dr. Martin Pivokonský z Ústavu pro hydrodynamiku AV ČR. Že jsou rostlinné viry dobrým sluhou, ale špatným pánem, dokazoval dr. Tomáš Moravec z Ústavu experimentální botaniky AV ČR. Samozřejmě se ale dostalo i na literární témata, konkrétně komiks v kontextu české literatury či na českou prózu po roce 1990.
Hojné účasti se těšila diskuse Změny klimatu: fakta, ne mýty, na níž pohovořili špičkoví odborníci v oboru. Úvodní přednášku studentům přednesl ředitel Ústavu fyziky atmosféry AV ČR dr. Radan Huth, který zdůraznil, že „odborníci klima zkoumají bez jakékoli ideové či ideologické předpojatosti“. Podle jeho názoru existují ve společnosti dvě skupiny s odlišnými názory na klima: alarmisté (změna klimatu je největší současné nebezpečí, jemuž musí lidstvo čelit; je třeba omezit produkci skleníkových plynů) a skeptici (lidská činnost klima neovlivňuje, klima se nemění a současné období není ničím výjimečné). „Obě skupiny si bohužel od vědců berou, co se jim zrovna hodí do krámu,“ uvedl na závěr své prezentace. Ačkoli vědci potvrzují, že se klima mění pravděpodobně též lidskou činností, najdou se lidé, kteří tyto skutečnosti zpochybňují – ať již vytrháváním jednotlivostí z kontextu či překrucováním faktů. Podle ředitele Centra pro otázky životního prostředí UK prof. Bedřicha Moldana je nutná základní představa, jak se klima bude vyvíjet a jak významnou roli lidská činnost sehrává. „Pokud dospějeme k tomu, že má úlohu zásadní, musíme se přizpůsobit. Nemá ovšem smysl, abychom se zaměřili jen na adaptační opatření.“
Součástí letošního Týdne vědy a techniky se staly i filmové projekce – o životním prostředí (Čas hlupáků, Nepříjemná pravda), o klíčovém setkání světových myslitelů (Konference TED) či souboji šachisty Garry Kasparova se supervýkonným počítačem (Game Over: Kasparov and the Machine). O dějinách Slovanů od jejich příchodu na Moravu až do zániku v 10. století pojednával film Velká Morava. Přehled všech projekcí naleznete na www.tydenvedy.cz/.
Během deseti let se na Týdnu vědy a techniky vystřídaly tisíce studentů. Mnohé z nich bezpochyby inspiroval k dalšímu studiu.
Organizátoři TVT nově přichystali znalostní kvizy, jichž se zúčastnilo na 800 soutěžících; výherci získali knižní ceny od Nakladatelství Academia. Chcete-li si některé z kvizů vyzkoušet nanečisto, navštivte www.tydenvedy.cz/. V hlavní budově Akademie věd čekaly jako každoročně výstavy. Ve foyer se těšila zájmu expozice Akademické páry: dvojkariérní partnerství ve vědě, výzkumu a vysokých školách, která formou rozhovorů představila portréty patnácti dvojic, v nichž oba partneři působí ve vědě či jako pedagogové na vysokých školách. Výstava je jedním z vyústění projektu Národní kontaktní centrum – ženy a věda, připravil ji Sociologický ústav AV ČR. Rozhovory souběžně vycházejí v knize Akademické duety: o profesním a soukromém životě ve vědě. Mimořádně otevřené výpovědi dávají nahlédnout na akademické páry v různých životních obdobích: od doktorandů na prahu vědecké kariéry, přes etablované vědce, až po ty, jež svou vědeckou dráhu pozvolna ukončují. Jen o pár kroků dále – ve vstupní části Knihovny AV ČR – mohli návštěvníci zhlédnout výstavu 10 let od rekonstrukce dvorany Knihovny AV ČR, která připomněla jedinečnou proměnu bývalého několikapatrového skladiště knih na moderní rekonstruovaný historický prostor. Rekonstrukce trvala od října 1998 do listopadu 1999 a náklady přesáhly 47 milionů korun. Společně s výstavou připravila Knihovna také dvě exkurze: ve dvoraně Knihovny a v Digitalizačním centru v Jenštejně u Prahy.
Vědu a umění se podařilo propojit Geofyzikálnímu ústavu AV ČR a Archivu výtvarného umění, když společně v prostorách Národní technické knihovny připravily expozici Rovnoběžky a průsečíky.
První patro hlavní budovy AV ČR opanovala expozice Astronomického ústavu AV ČR Pohledy do nebe, která představila velkoformátové snímky pořízené na nejvýkonnější observatoři světa – Evropské jižní observatoři, dále výstava fotografií převážně anorganických materiálů, jež získali vědci z Ústavu fyzikální chemie J. Heyrovského AV ČR za pomoci výkonných mikroskopů (Mikroskopy – oči do nanosvěta) či výstava s chytlavým názvem Mutanti!, kterou připravil Ústav experimentální botaniky AV ČR. Nepleťme si však mutanty s hrůznými obludami. Jsou totiž všude mezi námi: někteří obývají laboratoře, kde pomáhají vědcům při výzkumu, na spoustu z nich ale narazíme i na vlastním talíři. Věděli jste například, že oblíbená nektarinka není ničím jiným nežli obyčejnou broskví? Za to, že je hladká, vděčí mutaci v jediném genu. Archeologický ústav AV ČR, Brno se pochlubil unikátními nálezy z výzkumů, které se zaměřily na duchovní život lidí ze dvou odlišných a časově vzdálených period na jižní Moravě (mladý paleolit a Velká Morava).
Vědu a umění se podařilo propojit Geofyzikálnímu ústavu AV ČR a Archivu výtvarného umění, když společně v prostorách Národní technické knihovny připravily expozici Rovnoběžky a průsečíky. Díla výtvarníků majících blízko k vědeckému bádání doplnil exponát Ústavu organické chemie a biochemie AV ČR, jenž představuje principy zkoumání chemických látek, které se ve formě léků uplatňují např. proti viru HIV. Obdobný exponát reprezentoval českou vědu na výstavě EXPO 2010 v Šanghaji.

Nikon Company in the cooperation with the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the ASCR started on January 21, 2004 operation of a new Nikon Centre of Excellence (NCE) in Super Resolution Microscopy. The Super Resolution Microscopy is a revolutionary microscopic method enabling the observation of the smaller details especially in the cell biology, than it was possible until now with the conventional methods. The Nikon Centre of Excellence was opened by the director of the IMG Professor Václav Hořejší who stated: “The purpose of the centre is to combine the technical expertise of the world leading imaging manufacturer and the scientific expertise of the researchers at the Institute of Molecular Genetics. I believe that we will together contribute to the new developments in biomedical sciences”.
The Institute of Atmospheric Physics celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, having pondered and analyzed the atmosphere since 1964. The institute was established in as a continuation of the former Laboratory for Meteorology of the Geophysical Institute. Its main research focus is on processes taking place in the troposphere. In 1994, the former Ionospheric Department of the Geophysical Institute joined the IAP, thereby expanding its research domain. Now its work covers the whole atmosphere from the boundary layer up to interplanetary space.
The latest LIFE Focus publication takes stock of the achievements to date of the LIFE Nature strand of the LIFE programme. Titled Long-term impact and sustainability of LIFE Nature, the 60-page brochure provides a user-friendly snapshot of the detailed assessments contained in the ex-post (after project's end) evaluations of LIFE projects. This evaluation process involves visits by experts from the LIFE Monitoring Team to a random sampling of completed LIFE Nature projects a number of years after they have finished. Some 9% of all LIFE Nature projects have been evaluated thus far. As well as outlining the history and methodology of the ex-post evaluation process, this new publication draws on the results of that qualitative research, backed up by new interviews with key stakeholders across several EU Member States, to highlight the lessons that can be learned in terms of LIFE Nature's long-term impact and sustainability at both project and programme level. The European Young Researchers’ Award (EYRA) is granted to researchers demonstrating outstanding research performance and leadership. At the same time, the award aims to inspire early stage and experienced researchers to incorporate a European dimension and perspective into their research. The Award is granted each year but the prize-giving-ceremony is held every two years at the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF) where the two recipients will present their work. The Award consists of a Certificate and a grant to cover travel and accommodation for the stay in the ESOF city. The EYRA 2014 Call for Post-doctoral candidates is NOW OPEN. The deadline for applications is 17 March 2014.

These mid-career scientists are awarded a total of nearly €575 million. Grants are worth up to €2.75 million each, with an average of €1.84 million per grant. This new funding will enable already independent excellent researchers to consolidate their own research teams and to develop their most innovative ideas across the European Research Area.

Technology Centre of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in cooperation with Slovak Organization for Research and Development Activities organized an international conference The EU HORIZON 2020 Programme and Teaming for Excellence in the European Research Area (H2020-TEERA 2013), which took place in Prague from 17th to 18th October, 2013. The conference launched the H2020 programme in the Czech Republic with special focus on forming high quality consortia needed to successfully solve the demanding projects of the programme.

Institute of Physics ASCR invites you to a seminar Ti:sapphire Lasers: Past, Present and Future by Peter Moulton on November 6th, 2013 at 15:00 in the Lecture Hall of the Institute of Physics ASCR, Na Slovance 1999/2, Prague 6. The presentation will review a history of a tunable laser based on Ti:Sapphire (Ti3+ doped Al2O3) and it will show the crucial milestones of the development of this unique system for generation of ultrashort laser pulses. Recent practical and potential future applications of these laser systems, as well as possible directions of future research will be also covered.
One of the architectural jewels of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague is its Villa Lanna. The Editorial Staff of Academic bulletin decided it deserved recognition with a supplement the Academy’s official magazine, enclosed with the last issue. The Staff is indebted to Prof. Jan Bažant who kindly wrote the historical and artistic aspects of this magnificent edifice. On 8 October 2013, the Editorial Staff arranged a small celebration during which Professor Bažant guided a group on a tour through this outstanding Neo-Renaissance villa.
Dr. James Rice, who is an American expert, was invited to the Czech Republic by the Academy of Science. Mars: The Next Step follows the popular program ‘To Space with a Little Mole,’ which came to the Czech Republic in 2011. Astronaut Andrew Feustel took the well-known cartoon character, Krtek, a little mole on a journey to space in the Endeavour spaces shuttle. Space exploration is a very popular subject in the Czech Republic and Dr. Rice shared his knowledge to inspire a future generation of Czech scientists. A press conference took place on Tuesday, 17 September 2013 at the headquarters of the Academy of Sciences of the CR in Prague. Other than the American scientist, also the Ambassador of the USA in Prague Norman L. Eisen and Vice-President of the ASCR RNDr. Jan Šafanda, CSc. appeared. “ Through this event, the ASCR is trying to show the public that space research in which a number of academic institutes are involved and which costs a great deal of money returns bounteously to society – both through expanding our knowledge of the solar system and also a number of practical applications and technological innovations,” said J. Šafanda.
In the frame of mutual scientific exchange between the Czech and Indian Academy of Sciences an important Indian palynologist Dr. Samir Sarkar visited between August 11 – September 8, 2013 the Laboratory of Paleobiology & Paleoecology. Main purpose of his visit was the study of Cretaceous palynomorphs, especially dinocysts from the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin. On September 3, 2013 he gave the lecture Palynofloral assemblages from Tertiary sediments of India: stratigraphic and palaeoenvironmental implications.
more 29 Aug 2013 Three million Euro’s for a vaccine against ticksThe Institute of Parasitology, which is part of the Biology Centre (ASCR) in Ceske Budejovice, in collaboration with six european partners, will investigate a vaccine against ticks. This vaccine has to prevent multiple tick-borne diseases. The entire project will be coordinated by The Academic Medical Center (AMC) located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The three million Euro’s, funded by the European Commission as part of the FP7 Work Program, will be divided within the consortium.

Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic will be hosting the 25th edition of the European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) which will take place in Prague from 20 until 25 September. The event is an annual exhibition of the finest work developed by young scientists in many different scientific fields; it enables the best young minds of different countries to compare ideas and admire each other’s work, as well as to compete with one another at European level. European Union Contest for Young Scientists is an initiative of the European Commission that was set up in 1989 with the goal of promoting cooperation and interchange between young scientists and guiding them towards a future career in science and technology. The Spintronics and Nanoelectronics group from the Institute of Physics, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic has completed another successful research project which opens new oportunities for future information technologies. The work which discovers and explains the origin of a new mechanism that allows to electrically control the velocity of domain walls driven across the magnetic medium was performed within the long term collaboration in spintronics research with groups from Cambridge and Nottingham in the UK. It was published on June 9, 2013 in the journal Nature Materials.

The Institute of Physics, the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic organizes the international conference that will take place in Prague on 29 July–3 August, 2013. Its main goal is to contribute to uncovering possible phenomenological (“quantum thermodynamic”) laws governing the behavior of mesoscopic systems and also to provide better understanding and insight into recent problems of the foundations, relying on theoretical and experimental methods of condensed matter physics and quantum optics. Special attention will be given to the dynamics of mesoscopic open systems and their relevance to problems of measurement of non-equilibrium quantum systems, thermal and quantum fluctuations, dissipation, noise, physics of quantum information and biological systems, in terms of both theory and experiment. FQMT’13 is follow-up to three previous conferences held in Prague 2004, 2008 and 2011. The FQMT'13 program will feature concerts of classical and jazz music performed by world-class musicians, held at outstanding venues of the city. Both the scientific program and the musical program are intended as a complement to one another, where scientists and musicians are encouraged to mingle and share their knowledge and experience. Euroscience and the ESOF local organizers that provide young researchers with a unique opportunity to interact with leading scientists from various scientific fields wish to encourage and promote the participation of groups of graduate and PhD candidates. The groups will reach Copenhagen in Denmark (the next host of ESOF in 2014) by bus (ideally a low emission vehicle) or some other low cost transportation. Selected participants will have access to all ESOF 2014 programmes and to the specific sessions dedicated to Young Researchers. This project is based on the successful Barcelona and Torino Science Bus event, realized by the ESOF2008 and ESOF2010 Team that brought to Barcelona 40 and to Torino 30 students. The Science busses participants will be offered a very low conference fee (80€), the possibility to be hosted in low cost accommodations in Copenhagen and onsite help provided by the local organisers.
