CERGE-EI
CERGE-EI offers world-class, merit-based, fully-funded graduate degrees in economics to students primarily from the transition countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and emerging market economies throughout the world. It is uniquely capable of providing instruction that brings under-prepared students from remote regions to the forefront of economic science. Its research arm provides a nexus for scholarship in theoretical and applied economics especially in public-policy areas related to development and transition. The name CERGE-EI refers to two distinct, and independent organizations. CERGE-EI, Prague is a joint workplace of The Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education (CERGE) of Charles University, Prague and the Economics Institute (EI) of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. CERGE-EI, New York is a US-chartered educational institution that awards both MA and PhD degrees based on study conducted at CERGE-EI, Prague.
CERGE
The Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education (CERGE) was established in 1991 as the first modern doctoral program in economics in the post-communist transition. It is an independent unit of Charles University in Prague, which has a long and venerable history having been founded 1348, the first university in Central Europe, and one of the oldest universities in Europe in continuous operation. CERGE was created with additional support from the international academic and donor community.
EI
The Economics Institute (EI) of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic was established in 1992 as a successor to two previous institutes that were dissolved at that time. It was created to further both high-quality research and training in scientific economics. The Academy of Sciences itself traces its history to the Royal Czech Society of Sciences, which was established in the Czech Crown lands in 1784.
In addition to major support from the government of the Czech Republic through Charles University and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and grants made directly to CERGE and EI from various external entities, the program receives extensive financial support from two supporting foundations.
CERGE-EI Foundation
The CERGE-EI Foundation is a US-based entity that raises funds to support the activities of CERGE-EI in particular, and education economics in the social sciences in Central and Eastern Europe. The CERGE-EI Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization and all contributions to the Foundation are tax-exempt under US law. The CERGE-EI Foundation also administers fee-based programs at CERGE-EI including the Undergraduate Program in Central European Studies (UPCES Study Abroad) and the Masters in Applied Economics (MAE) and serves as the administrative body for the Central European hub of the Global Development Network (GDN) located at CERGE-EI.
Nadace CERGE-EI
Nadace CERGE-EI is a Czech non-profit entity created to raise funds that help support economics education in the Czech Republic and throughout Central and Eastern Europe. In particular, Nadace CERGE-EI is dedicated to garnering the financial support necessary to sustain and advance the mission of CERGE-EI, and actively seeks financial support from the private sector throughout Central and Eastern Europe, both for operating funds and for endowment.
