Horizon 2020 has ambitious goals. Running from 2014 to 2020 with an €70 billion budget, the EU’s new program for research and innovation shall secure Europe’s global competitiveness, new growth and jobs in Europe. It shall provide a boost to top-level research in Europe, strengthen industrial leadership in innovation (which includes major investment in key enabling technologies) and address major societal challenges such as demographic change and health, food security and sustainable agriculture and bio-economy, secure and clean and efficient energy, smart and integrated transport, climate action and resource efficiency, inclusive and innovative and secure societies etc. However, there are significant regional disparities across European research and innovation performance which need to be addressed. The conference will thus focus on processes of building high quality research in Europe’s mentioned in the White paper on Teaming for Excellence launched and signed by several premier European institutions in January of this year. The White Paper considers teaming as a high speed lift to excellence through highly focused and intensive support to create research environments and new centres of excellence and breaking thus local barriers to scientific excellence. Teaming of excellent research institutions and those from less performing RDI regions will increase the EU potential to achieve the research and innovation goals.
