Completed project

Support for the Social Acceptance and Effective Enforcement of Gender Equality in Public Sphere

Project duration:
2004 - 2009

The subject of this sociological project is support for the social acceptance of the institutional mechanisms designed for the enforcement of the principle of egual opportunities for men and women in the public sphere. The project provides targeted user groups with access to research results, fosters public understanding and social confidence in topics of gender, and develops effective social intervention in gendered social practise. The project output will evaluate the impact of this intervention on taboo issues and on the process of enforcing a scientific line of reasoning in social discourses relating to important issues in the lives of Czech women and men, and will critically assess the real benefit in the transfer of gender-related findings, data and research studies. The research focus of this applied project corresponds to the necessity of strengthening the credibility and importance of science and research for addressing pressing and socially urgent issues in the contemporary world.

The process of the individualization of the society has already been in progress for several centuries. One of its consequences is the increase of differences among individuals, the advocacy of the individual interests instead of the collective ones and mostly the growth of the space for free choices and decisions. The second side of the increasing freedom is the growth of the insecurity. However, this process is irreversible.

The author addresses in the article the debate concerning the application of quotas for the assertion of equal representation of men and women in politics. She based her argument on the theory of Nancy Fraser and Iris Young. With reference to some practical and empirical mentions she argues for efficacy of quotas for assertion of parity of participation between women and men.

Mothers as heads of one-parent families become very often the only breadwinners for their families, while still being the primary carers for their children. This leads to the worsening of the economical situation of their families. The results of my research presented in this article show further the barriers that women encounter while trying to provide for their families and the values that intervene in their work life choices.
