Cerium oxide – ceria – is a material broadly used as an active catalyst support. In order to disentangle various contributions to its chemical activity we prepare thin films of ceria on Cu(111) with varying but precisely controlled morphology and stoichiometry and study how the changes of the morphology and stoichiometry influence the activity of ceria in chemical reactions with simple molecules.
