Summer School & Workshop Particles in Flows

Institute of Mathematics AS CR, Prague, 25–31 August 2014
Organizers: Tomáš Bodnár, Giovanni Paolo Galdi, Šárka Nečasová more

The aim of the summer school is to present a comprehensive series of lectures on various aspects of problems involving particles in flows. It is organized as a multidisciplinary event with topics ranging from theoretical and numerical mathematics up to physics and applications. The emphasize will be on models related to topics originating in environmental, biomedical and industrial applications. The summer course is prepared for graduate students, young scientists, and other interested specialists. Besides of the course lectures, the program will include a one day workshop (on Wednesday, August 27) dedicated to short, more advanced lectures given by attending scientists.close

Oberwolfach Seminar: Analysis of Compressible Navier Stokes Equations and Related Topics

The seminar will be organized by Eduard Feireisl (Prague), David Gérard-Varet (Paris), Rupert Klein (Berlin) and Antonín Novotný (Toulon) in Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, 23-29 November, 2014. more

The main goal is to present and discuss the state of the art of the mathematical theory of complete fluid systems, with the emphasis put on the underlying thermodynamical principles. Highlighting the new emerging trends we aim to inspire young researchers in their future activities.close

ERC Consolidator Grant for Michal Koucký

Our long-time researcher Michal Koucký has been awarded ERC Consolidator Grant for the project "LBCAD – Lower bounds for combinatorial algorithms and dynamic problems" for 2014–2018. more

The project aims to show that known, somewhat efficient, algorithms for various problems cannot be substantially improved.close

The Neuron Prize 2013 awarded to Professor Vojtěch Rödl

The Neuron Foundation for Support of Science and Research awarded the Neuron Prize 2013 for the Longlife Work to Prof. RNDr. Vojtěch Rödl, CSc., the renown Czech specialist in combinatorics and graph theory working at the Emory University in Atlanta.

Jean-Pierre Bourguignon new president of the European Research Council

Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, the 2nd President of the European Mathematical Society (1995-98), has been appointed the President of the European Research Council (ERC) since 1st January 2014. more

Since 2007, the ERC has funded European top researchers through grants given on the base of applications that are evaluated by expert panels. In Horizon 2020, the ERC appears as a crucial component in the EU long-term research strategy to support the most talented and creative scientists in blue-sky research.close

The Abel Prize Laureate 2013: Pierre Deligne

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has decided to award the Abel Prize for 2013 to Pierre Deligne, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey, USA, “for seminal contributions to algebraic geometry and for their transformative impact on number theory, representation theory, and related fields”.

Honorary Medal of the Czech Mathematical Society for Professor Alois Kufner

The Czech Mathematical Society awared the Honorary Medal to Professor Alois Kufner for his lifelong contribution to the development of the Czech mathematics and of the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists. Professor Kufner was among founders of the Czech Mathematical Society and represented Czech mathematicians in the European Mathematical Society as a member of its first Executive Committee.

Josef Hlávka Honorary Medal for Professor Miroslav Fiedler

Every year, the prominent foundation "Nadání Josefa, Marie a Zdeňky Hlávkových" is awarding Honorary Medals to nestors and founding personalities of the Czech science and art for their lifelong work. Among those who have been awarded the Medal on 16 November 2013, the eve of the National Day of Struggle for Freedom and Democracy, was Professor Miroslav Fiedler, the distinguished member of Department of Mathematical Logic, Algebra and Theoretical Computer Science.

ERC Advanced Grant for Pavel Pudlák

Pavel Pudlák has been awarded ERC Advanced Grant "FEALORA – Feasibility, logic and randomness in computational complexity" for 2014–2018. Another great success: the second ERC Advanced Grant in the Institute of Mathematics and – as in the previous year – the only one awarded to the Czech researcher in 2013. Research of Pudlák's team is motivated by the major unsolved problem in computer science called "P versus NP". They are looking for connections between the computational complexity and the proof complexity which represent two different views of the general phenomenon of complexity.
A call for a post-doc position and for a Ph.D. student position within the FEALORA grant has been opened.
