Astronomical Institute's Activity Report 2007-2008

Astronomical Institute has published its Activity Report for years 2007-2008. Activity Report is being published regularly every two years since 1995 and presents research and social activities of the Institute in the past two-year period.

The institute was deeply involved in the process of joining the Czech Republic to European Southern Observatory (ESO) in 2007 and European Space Agency (ESA) in 2008. In this context we also proceeded with preparations of the project “European Center of Excellence – Center for Collaboration with ESO and ESA” to promote a closer collaboration with these two European research bodies.

The institute has undertaken an upgrade of robotic control of the 2-meter stellar telescope, as well as 65-cm telescope jointly operated with the Charles University and Polar Zenith Tube telescope. The project of Czech national network of automatic fireball cameras was finalized and further steps were undertaken to develop a simillar network in Australia. New 50-cm stellar telescope for detecting optical counterparts of high-energy events was put into test operation.

Major social events were the transformation of the Institute to a “Public Research Institution – v.v.i.” in 2007 and namely the prestigious organization of the 26th General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union in August 2006, which has been attended by more than 2400 astronomers from all over the word.
