Summer School & Workshop Particles in Flows
Institute of Mathematics AS CR, Prague, 25–31 August 2014
Organizers: Tomáš Bodnár, Giovanni Paolo Galdi, Šárka Nečasová more
The aim of the summer school is to present a comprehensive series of lectures on various aspects of problems involving particles in flows. It is organized as a multidisciplinary event with topics ranging from theoretical and numerical mathematics up to physics and applications. The emphasize will be on models related to topics originating in environmental, biomedical and industrial applications. The summer course is prepared for graduate students, young scientists, and other interested specialists. Besides of the course lectures, the program will include a one day workshop (on Wednesday, August 27) dedicated to short, more advanced lectures given by attending scientists.close
Oberwolfach Seminar: Analysis of Compressible Navier Stokes Equations and Related Topics
The seminar will be organized by Eduard Feireisl (Prague), David Gérard-Varet (Paris), Rupert Klein (Berlin) and Antonín Novotný (Toulon) in Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, 23-29 November, 2014. more
The main goal is to present and discuss the state of the art of the mathematical theory of complete fluid systems, with the emphasis put on the underlying thermodynamical principles. Highlighting the new emerging trends we aim to inspire young researchers in their future activities.close
ERC Consolidator Grant for Michal Koucký
Our long-time researcher Michal Koucký has been awarded ERC Consolidator Grant for the project "LBCAD – Lower bounds for combinatorial algorithms and dynamic problems" for 2014–2018. more
The project aims to show that known, somewhat efficient, algorithms for various problems cannot be substantially improved.close

The Neuron Prize 2013 awarded to Professor Vojtěch Rödl
The Neuron Foundation for Support of Science and Research awarded the Neuron Prize 2013 for the Longlife Work to Prof. RNDr. Vojtěch Rödl, CSc., the renown Czech specialist in combinatorics and graph theory working at the Emory University in Atlanta.
Jean-Pierre Bourguignon new president of the European Research Council
Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, the 2nd President of the European Mathematical Society (1995-98), has been appointed the President of the European Research Council (ERC) since 1st January 2014. more
Since 2007, the ERC has funded European top researchers through grants given on the base of applications that are evaluated by expert panels. In Horizon 2020, the ERC appears as a crucial component in the EU long-term research strategy to support the most talented and creative scientists in blue-sky research.close

Otto Wichterle Premium for young researchers awarded to Jakub Šístek
Ing. Jakub Šístek, PhD., received from the President of the Academy of Sciences Prof. Jiří Drahoš the Otto Wichterle Premium for young researchers. The award connected with a financial premium of 90 000 crowns in the three subsequent years has been established in 2002 to encourage and support young promising researchers in institutes of the Academy of Sciences. Jakub Šístek is one of 23 young researches awarded the Premium this year.
ERC Advanced Grant for Eduard Feireisl
Eduard Feireisl's ERC Advanced Grant proposal "MATHEF – Mathematical Thermodynamics of Fluids" has been selected for funding in the period 2013–2018. A great success of the Czech mathematics as this is the first ERC Advanced Grant for mathematics in the Czech Republic and the only one assigned to a Czech scientist this year! Eduard Feireisl was the chair of the Scientific Committee of the 6th European Congress of Mathematics in Kraków, 2012, and is also the chair of the Scientific Committee of Equadiff 13 in Praha, 2013. The call for a PhD. student to work in the grant has been closed.
