Abstract:
As a government funded research institute, our object at KIMS is to comprehensively facilitate R&D, test and evaluation and provide technical support in order to promote innovative technology and industrial development. Especially KIMS is focused on metallurgy, ceramics, surface materials, composites and their processing technologies.
Effect of Severe Plastic Deformation on Microstructure and
Mechanical Properties in Aluminum Alloys
Suk Bong Kang, Ph.D.
Abstract:
In order to get ultra fine grained materials, many unique processes, such as equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), accumulative roll bonding (ARB), warm multiple deformation (WMD) and high pressure torsion (HPT) etc. were developed to impose high plastic strain on various metallic materials. Several severe plastic deformation processes were carried out to control microstructure and mechanical properties on different aluminum alloys in this study. Lamellae eutectics of Al-33%Cu alloy transform homogeneously into an equiaxed duplex microstructure with grain size ~1.1 μm through 8 pass ECAP at 400oC. The Al-5%Mg-0.2% Sc-0.1% Zr alloy has fine grain size of 2-3 m with increasing WMD passes. The fine grains formed by dynamic recrystallization become stable due to the formation of Al3Sc, Al3Zr and Al3(Scx Zr1-x) precipitates, which prevents the softening and enhances the strength and elongation at ambient temperature. The balance of microstructure and tensile property was also evaluated on the ARBed 3003 alloy and 8011 alloy due to recrystallization or recovery.
Recent R&D Advances on Magnetic Powder Materials
in Korea Institute of Materials Science
Chul-Jin Choi, Ph.D.
Abstract:
Recently, great R&D efforts have been focused on new and high performance magnetic powder materials due to their essential components in many industrial areas such as hybrid and electric vehicles, motors, wind power generation, electronic devices, etc. Their production technologies and applications will be rapidly growing in the future green industries. Especially, with the recent shortage of rare earth resources, their reducing and replacement technology in permanent magnetic materials have drawn great worldwide attention. For the development of new and high performance magnetic powder materials, the importance of their processing and characterization technology has been emphasized. Recently, Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS), one of the major national institutes in Korea, has been actively conducting researches on the magnetic powder materials in wide areas to develop the new processing technology and apply them to the industries. Thus this paper covers current magnetic powder materials related research activities in KIMS and their technical issues on the industrialization.
