Department of Functional Materials

Activities

The Functional materials department was established at IP ASCR as a new department in January 2009. It brought together researchers working in the field of functional engineering materials and nanostructured diamond thin films. Presently the activities of the department are focused on the following topics:

  • Functional engineering materials for smart structures and composites
  • Smart textiles with NiTi shape memory alloy filaments
  • Preparation and characterisation of nanodiamond thin films by plasma enhanced microwave CVD system
  • Quantum chemistry of nanomaterials for bioapplications and molecular electronics
  • Magnetic shape memory materials
  • Advanced intermetallic alloys: casting, characterization and single crystal growth
  • Engineering metallurgy with synchrotrons and neutrons
  • In-situ TEM, X-ray and neutron diffraction investigations of deformation processes in materials
