Advaced-level Workshop in Photograph Conservation

The restorer Tereza Cíglerová from the Institute of Art History, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, took part in an international workshop on the identification and restoration of colour and digital photographs from 28 July to 8 August 2014. The workshop, entitled Advanced-Level Workshop in Photograph Conservation: Identification and Conservation Strategies for Color and Digital Prints, was organised for restorers of photographs, in particular from Central and Eastern Europe, by the Getty Conservation Institute. The two-week training course was held in the Hungarian National Museum (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum) in Budapest.

The programme of the workshop was made up of lectures on theory, tutorials in identifying the various processes of colour and digital photographs, and practical testing of suitable and unsuitable restoring methods on a wide range of these materials. The instructor for the section on colour photographs was Sylvie Pénichon, a restorer from the Art Institute of Chicago, and the section devoted to digital prints was led by Martin Jürgens, a photograph restorer from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The workshop was also a very good opportunity to maintain contacts with colleagues from other countries, and made possible the transfer of theoretical and practical experiences between the participants in the course and their instructors.
